My blog, that is. Yeah me! The girl who eschews at all costs anything journal- or diary-oriented has actually maintained a blog for three years. I know I said it a year ago, but I still consider this nothing short of miraculous. I think it’s because every so often someone actually responds to my nattering. (As an aside, the lovely lady in the photo with my sister and nephew and I is my sister-in-law’s wonderful mom, a.k.a. Amma (Henrik’s version of Gramma).) Journals and diaries are completely unresponsive and I, like most of the human race, crave human contact. I may be an introvert, but I’m not dead. I value human connection as much as–and possibly more than, I might argue–any extrovert. But that’s a dissertation for another day.
So. On to truly interesting items. First, my niece and nephew are as adorable as ever… and Claire is five months old. Her dress is for an 18-month-old. Little girl ain’t so little! But man alive, she’s cute as can be! Both she and big brother were in their USC colors to support their mama.
I’m ti-red. That’s right… two syllables worth of tired. I was up at 5:00 a.m. this morning and off to the airport (Los Angeles International Airport, a.k.a. LAX, to be exact) by 5:45 a.m. Seriously. Thank heavens there was no traffic at LAX! (I say that because there was a ton of traffic in the airport at 11:30 p.m. last Wednesday night!) The flight was uneventful (thank goodness!).
After landing, I left my parents on the curb while I went to retrieve their car. Dad had a lumbar fusion last summer and is still a chronic pain patient. The man was tanked on meds and barely coherent (don’t blame him, his meds are strong). I got the car without incident. I drove up to the exit and realized I had no parking ticket. Luckily no one had driven up behind me in my lane and I was able to back up and park on the shoulder. I called the parental units to find out where the parking ticket had been stashed. Mom had it. At the terminal. She had to take the shuttle to the parking lot with the parking ticket so we could pay to get the car out. You’ve got to be kidding me! This is the reason you leave the ticket on your dash! Aye-yi-yi. Then on the drive home, there was a car accident that had me driving 15-20 mph for ten miles. TEN MILES! Sooo irritatingly slow. (Ethan has his “V for Victory” up in time with the pep band’s playing of Conquest! It’s a USC thing… trust me.)
We went straight from the airport (you know you’re tired when you type “hospital” instead of “airport”–for the record, there were no trips to the hospital!) to my coworker’s parents’ home in Woodland Park. Wendi’s eldest son, Brayton, graduated from high school this week and we were invited to the grad party. My family has spent two of the last three Christmas Eve services with Wendi and her boys and we’ve barbequed with them. But Woodland Park is a good hour from my home. That means I arrived home around 4:45 p.m. That’s a very long day… with most of it spent in a car or plane. Oy vey. (By the by… as Adri was walking off, her mom handed Henrik over the fence. Adri was pregnant with him as she started her program and she gave birth to Claire one month prior to defending her dissertation. Ethan called her Ed.D. her third most important accomplishment in the past three years. I concur.)
But the quick trip home was a smashing success! Adri was radiant this weekend. I’m sure you’d consider me biased, but I really do think my sister-in-law is beautiful. Inside and out. She’s also whip smart. She was awarded her Doctorate of Education on Thursday. Should she so choose, she may put the alphabet soup after her name. She’s choosing not to. She didn’t work for the degree to impress anyone. She did it for herself. Ethan, Adri, and I all attended the University of Southern California, a.k.a. USC (don’t start with the jokes, I’ve heard them all!).
USC was a lovely campus when I arrived in the fall of 1994 and it’s even more so now. She’s a proud lady and she always shows her best side for commencement so the roses were in bloom, the grass was green, the fountains gleamed, the brick and stone buildings looked very academic, and there were people with caps and gowns walking around everywhere. I soaked up every minute because it felt like I was home. Anyway, Henrik and Claire were both cute as can be. And I’m not sure yet if Henrik has given Auntie Beth a bit of his sniffles. Since I still hug and kiss the munchkins even when they’re germy, ti’s always possible. I think my ailment is allergy-related, though. I did sleep with the windows open every night out there and while I don’t suffer from allergies in Colorado, I most certainly do react to the pollen back home! (And this photo of part of the fam is Adri’s graduation party… Julie had to work (boo!) and Brian and Ally were back here in Colorado (double boo!).)
So that’s the quick hit on my days out west. I’ll give you more pictures later (because my niece and nephew are too cute for their own good!). Suffice it to say, it was a good trip. Oh! I’ll also have to tell you about Ethan’s thoughts on my career stuffs. And Mike and Nancy’s take on it. And Adri’s parents. And Adri. Okay… everyone. Until then, I need sleep! Good night!
